The Pre-Kindergarten program of the Omaha Public Schools is based on the belief that every child is uniquely gifted with the capacity to learn and grow academically. Our instruction is designed to accommodate a broad range of children's needs and learning styles. The framework is standards-based and is focused on promoting curiosity, literature, numeracy and problem solving.
Equally important is the classroom philosophy of encouraging the support of parents/guardians as full partners in their child's education.
One of the simplest and most effective ways to prepare for Pre-K is to spend up to 20 minutes each day reading to your child. The exposure to language builds literacy skills important in the educational process. Click here to see the Featured Books section. Most are award-winning stories that will stir your child's imagination and help develop a love of literature. Also, talk with your child about colors, numbers, shapes and sizes. Encourage their natural curiosity. Being familiar with these concepts will go a long way in preparing your child for a successful Pre-K school year. Take a look into a "day in the life" of a pre-kindergarten classroom by visiting the View from a Room tab. Almost every section will feature tips from the classroom teacher on how parents can continue the learning process at home.
The Early Childhood Programs in the Omaha Public Schools are filled with joyful moments of
discovery and growth for your child.

The Title I Pre-Kindergarten program is for children who turn four by July 31 of the year they wish to enroll. All age-eligible children participate in a screening/assessment process. Placement is based on the results of the assessment. Please be aware, not all children who are screened gain acceptance into the program. This is due to the fact that there are a limited number of slots. Those showing a greater need are placed in the slots first.
To apply for the prekindergarten program you must attend an application/screening date to complete all the necessary paperwork and have your child screened. The schedule for the application screening dates is available on the Omaha Public Schools website at district.ops.org. The link to the schedule can be accessed by clicking on the early childhood application day box on the right side of the homepage.
