Board President Message

Lacey Merica, President Omaha Public Schools Board of Education

OPS Community Members, Partners and Supporters:

The two remaining finalists for Superintendent, Dr. Paul Gausman and D. Khalid Mumin, both withdrew their candidacy late Saturday evening, March 18.

On behalf of the Board of Education, I extend sincere thanks to all three finalists, including Dr. Jane Stavem, for being part of the search process, and we respect their decisions to withdraw.

The Board remains committed to finding the strongest possible candidate to serve as our Superintendent. We will meet tomorrow at our regularly scheduled board meeting, March 20 at 6:30 p.m., to discuss next steps.

Since this process began, the Board has worked diligently to ensure an open, transparent process for our staff, families and the public. We will continue to share updates here as new information becomes available. Please check the Web page often.

Being Superintendent of the Omaha Public Schools is a special job. We will work tirelessly to find a candidate who garners the widespread support of our parents, teachers, community and the Board. Our students deserve nothing less.

Background Information: The Board voted to approve the final three candidate finalists following a recommendation from the search firm during a special open board meeting Tuesday, Feb. 28. Since that time, the candidates have taken part in official interviews, which were held March 6 and March 7 and in “meet and greet” sessions, which were open to the public March 6, 7 and 8.

McPherson & Jacobson, the national search firm hired to lead the search process, closed the application period on Feb. 8. A total of 33 completed applications were received from 19 states, including Nebraska.

Omaha Public Schools is committed to sharing information on the superintendent search process,
as well as getting your input and feedback.
