Student Success Center Program (SSC)
This program exists in all of the high schools. Its purpose is to provide students with opportunities to stay in school and minimize absences. As an alternative to excessive number of out of school suspensions, the SSC minimizes the amount of time and number of times a student is out of the classroom during instruction for disciplinary reasons. In the SSC, students work in a closed classroom environment which minimizes distractions and allows them to focus on their needs both academically and socially.
Components of the SSC include individual guidance, instruction on writing skills, study skills, social skills, and conflict resolution. The center encourages students to accept responsibility for their actions and behavior. The program is designed to address inappropriate student behavior from a disciplinary approach. The goal is to create a school climate in which discipline is not seen and used as an opportunity for staff to punish students but as an opportunity to instruct them. We want to encourage our staff to respond to disciplinary situations using an instructional approach that de-escalates problem or possible problem situations, thereby modeling appropriate behavior for our students.
