Career Academies

Career Academies are small learning communities established at the high school level that use career strands as an organizing framework

First established 35 years ago and geared toward restructuring large high schools

Approximately 2,500 high schools in the U.S.

Career Academy Common Practices

Preparing students for post-secondary education, high wage, high demand, and high skilled careers

Delivering academic instruction in the context of a broad occupational or career strand;

Recruiting and enrollment of students based on their interest in a career theme

Establishing a multi-grade program/pathway for students

Developing a small learning community to keep groups of students together over several years

Involving business and industry partnerships to support career academies.
