Elementary English Learners

At the elementary level, there are three service models:

 Dual Language: Instruction is provided in both English and Spanish to learn academic content in both langauges with the goal of students becoming bi-literate. Classes are made up of English learners and English speaking students. The teacher is EL endorsed, or recieves training in strategies to support ELs.

 Pull-out English Learner Instruction: The majority of instruction is provided in the mainstream classroom with a mix of English learners and English-speaking students. Classroom teachers use strategies to make academic instruction in English understandable to English learners. In addition, English-language instruction is provided outside of the mainstream classroom for a short amount of time in a small group setting. The teacher is EL endorsed, or receives training/coaching on strategies to support ELs.

 EL Push-In/In-Class Supports: Instruction is provided in the mainstream classroom with a mix of English learners and English-speaking students. Classroom teachers use strategies to make academic instruction in English understandable to English learners. In some cases a designated EL teacher will provide English-language instruction in the mainstream classroom for a short amount of time in a small group or through a co-teaching model. The teacher is EL endorsed, or receives training/coaching on strategies to support ELs.
