Secondary English Learners Program

The secondary EL program provides academic support to English learners through EL course offerings, sheltered English content area courses, mainstream support, and tutorial support. EL course offerings are offered in three levels—beginning, intermediate, and advanced. Students may participate in tutorial support in order to support achievement in content area classes. The Dual Language program is an option available at Beveridge, Norris, Marrs and South.

The EL curriculum is aligned to grade-level standards in the areas of reading, writing, listening, and speaking and some content areas and the K-12 English Language Proficiency Standards.

EL courses include a focus on skill development in reading, writing, grammar, vocabulary, listening, speaking, study skills, and cultural competency. In addition, the EL curriculum includes preparation for mainstream content area study. Courses with this focus align with standards for the particular area of study, including math, science, social studies and technology.
