24 June McMillan Magnet Jump Start Summer Camp June 24, 2011 By News News 0 McMillan Magnet Center offered its annual Jump Start summer camp in June 2011 for incoming seventh-graders. The camp allows students a chance to learn more about life in middle school and take part in a wide range of classes. The final week of the program included "exploratory" units including rocketry, cooking club, recycled art club, origami, crafts, and engineering club. McMillan also partnered with North High Magnet School to provide an aeronautics camp for interested students. Related Articles McMillan Magnet Wins National Pentathlon Scrimmage McMillan Magnet Wins National United States Academic Decathlon (USAD) Pentathlon Scrimmage In the January Academic Pentathlon National scrimmage, McMillan Magnet Middle School outscored the reigning national champions from Riverview Middle School in Plymouth, Wis., to win the Overall Team gold medal. The Academic Pentathlon is a five event competition for middle school students that encourages and rewards academic excellence. The events are joined thematically around the “Age of Empire.” Students compete in essay, math, music, science and social science. Individual and team awards are given. The Academic Pentathlon is sponsored by the OPS Office of Gifted and Talented Education. Native American Students Participate in Summer Art Camp The OPS Native American Indian Education Department and KANEKO co-hosted a summer art program in early July. Twenty Native American students had the opportunity to work with artists Therman Statom and Ashley Rodriguez Reed, as well as others from KANEKO. Projects ranged from designing and printing T-shirts to making glass collages. Participants also enjoyed field trips to KANEKO and Therman Statom's art studio. The program will offer the same students additional art opportunities during the 2010-2011 school year. Support for the program is provided by the Nebraska Arts Council, Nebraska Cultural Endowment, an anonymous grant, OPS and KANEKO. Click here to see a slideshow from the art camp! Catlin Magnet Provides Summer School Art Workshop Catlin Magnet summer school students spent a week with artist-in-residence Tom Sitzman - a local sculptor whose work can be seen throughout Omaha - to learn more about sculpting. The workshop was part of the school's Imagination-themed week, during which students worked on various artistic concepts including utilizing space, 2D and 3D dimensions, moving through space either quickly or slowly, form and positive/negative space. Activities also helped them make connections between math and art. At the conclusion of the weeklong workshop, students created a sculpture of their own to take home. North High Magnet/Benson High Magnet Family Festival North High Magnet and Benson High Magnet hosted the second of four family festivals in October that celebrate the district's 150th anniversary. Congratulations to McMillan Magnet Teacher Carrie Pratt Congratulations to McMillan Magnet information technology teacher Carrie Pratt who was named the 2012 Middle School Teacher of the Year by the National Business Education Association (NBEA). Carrie was recognized for her work in the classroom teaching students technology and for being a demonstration site classroom for Common Sense Media. She was also honored for her work on curriculum development projects and her involvement in McMillan's after school program. Congratulations to McMillan Magnet Nurse Elizabeth Wilson!
