Belle Ryan Summer School Students Compete in Olympic-Style Field Day Belle Ryan Elementary summer school and Summer Library Program students became Olympic athletes during the school's Olympic-themed Field Day. The events included Ireland's Potato Race, Greece's Olympic Torch Relay, Jamaica's Javelin Throw, Portugal's Popcorn Machine, Honduras' Hula Hooping and France's Flipping Flapjacks. The summer school theme this year was "Go for the Gold" and Field Day was the culminating activity after students studied and wrote about the history of the Olympic Games. Career Center Presents Summer Career Explorations Program Incoming ninth-, tenth- and eleventh-grade OPS students participated in a unique summer survey course at the OPS Career Center that highlighted career options. The Career Explorations Program gave students hands-on instruction in several areas of study offered by the Career Center including automotive care, construction, television broadcasting, photography, health sciences and culinary arts. In addition to gaining valuable exposure to a variety of careers, students who completed the program obtained CPR certification and had an opportunity to participate in Impact One Community Connection's Great Summer Jobs Program, which provided additional employment and life skills training beyond summer school. Kennedy Elementary Summer School 2011 Howard Kennedy Elementary summer school students spent fun-filled days engaged in academic studies, enrichment activities and field trips. Computer software programs such as "Fast Math" and "Imagine Learning" helped students improve their math and reading skills, while art programs, P.E. activities and golf lessons provided students with opportunities to tap their creative imaginations and stay fit. All-day excursions to the Lauritzen Gardens, Gifford Farms, Schramm Park, the Wildlife Safari and the Henry Doorly Zoo exposed students to new and interesting outdoor learning experiences as well. K – 6th Grade Parent Math Nights All parents of students K-6th grade are welcome to attend quarterly Parent Math Nights. At each Parent Night, attendees will: experience what their students are currently learning in math and become familiar with grade level curriculum, vocabulary, and expectations see first-hand how students apply math strategies learn how to support student learning at home 2019–2020 K-6 PARENT MATH NIGHT DATES September 12, 2019 at Skinner Magnet Elementary November 14, 2019 at Ashland Park-Robbins Elementary January 16, 2020 at Beveridge Magnet Middle School March 19, 2020 at Prairie Wind Elementary Two parent sessions each date: 6:00-7:00pm & 7:00-8:00pm These nights are designed for adult learners.
